Reinventing Pruning: Implementing the New North American Pruning Standards and Best Management Practices

Bruce Fraedrich

The North American Standards for tree pruning has traditionally been very similar to British Standards. In 2017, the North American Standards underwent major revisions that introduces a fresh approach to developing tree-pruning specifications that will help educate consumers to correct pruning practices and will help production arborists to execute the specifications.

This presentation will review key pruning goals, provide discussion on pruning systems and developing detailed specifications to achieve pruning objectives. Emphasis will be placed on developing pruning specifications according to species, age and site considerations and will provide key pruning considerations through the lifespan of the tree from the formative years through old age.
