Description

If you like purple foilage then this is the tree for you, this clone was introduced in the 1850s but has since been unfairly superseeded by improved selections such as bloodgood.

Acer palmatum Atropurpureum makes a small tree for a sheltered position such as a courtyard or urban garden.

It has a rounded habit with its deeply lobed purple leaves turning shades of luminescent red in autumn.

Japanese Maples do best in rich moist but free draining loamy soils.
