Description

This birch is originally from North East Asia and Japan and was first cultivated in the 1880s.

Always the first tree to emerge with new leaf in the spring at Barcham and one of the first to fall in autumn.

Importantly it tolerates reflected heat and light very adequately so is a great urban tree that requires little maintenance.

An elegant and vigorous medium to large tree the bright green often heart shaped and prominently veined leaves which appear very early in spring become clear yellow in autumn.

It keeps a conical habit if the central leader is retained.

A superb tree for city or garden planting with peeling creamy bark tinted pink. It grows well on most soils.

The Dutch clone Betula ermanii Holland is an improved clone with greater uniformity but is generally sold without its full title. This is the clone we favour.
