A great favourite at Barcham this female Holly is a vigorous grower and won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.
It is a form of Ilex x keohneana and is thought to be of French origin.
Its thick green leaves are large and resemble the shape and form of Castanea sativa from which it derives its name.
Its good apical dominance produces a medium to large tree of conical habit. Red berries are produced in abundance in the autumn and it is tolerant of shade.
Like all hollies it will thrive on most soils so long as they are well drained.
Mature height: 7-12m
Mature spread: 3-6m
