Ilex x Altaclerensis 'Golden King' is one of the very best golden variegated hollies.
It was derived from a cutting of Ilex x Hendersonii in Edinburgh in 1884.
This small evergreen won the First Class Certificate in 1898 and the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.
Ilex 'Golden King' is tolerant of coastal conditions and air pollution, it is a slow growing tree of medium size and pyramidal form.
The spineless leaves have a vivid golden margin which contrasts fantastically with a brilliant blue sky in the winter time.
