Introduced in 1845 by PF von Siebold from its native Japan this is often used as a stilted hedge above the fence line so is a favourite in urban gardens where privacy is needed.

It is very useful in a small garden as its trunk below the fence line takes up little garden space.

A small semi-evergreen tree it is generally regarded as an evergreen in the south of England.

It has a rounded habit long pointed leaves and white flowers which are borne in autumn.

Very good in restricted areas and it thrives on most soils
