We grow this clone as a tree. It is a hybrid of Magnolia acuminata and was raised at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden before being introduced in 1981.
The glorious flowers are yellow with a greener tinge held at the base of the outer petals and are borne in April / May.
Its leaves are nice and large to carry on the interest throughout the summer. Yellow Bird is quite a tidy looking tree with a pyramidal habit making it a good choice for medium size gardens and urban areas. It will grow on most well drained soils, preferably acid and is better without grass competition.
