It has a long history originating from Japan but was developed in France early in the 19th century.
It has almost become synonymous with urban gardens in England.
Usually grown as a large shrub with a broad round habit the large white purple tinted tulip-like flowers appear in April and May before the arrival of foliage.
It tolerates heavy clay soils and is also moderately lime tolerant.
