Like all crab apples it favours heavier soils and is far more tolerant of wet conditions than flowering cherries that are more specific to free draining soils.

The fruits are longer lasting than Malus Golden Hornet and are great for those crab apple jelly makers amongst you. Malus Butterball has the added bonus of a striking autumnal leaf display so it is an ideal candidate to provide lots of interest for a small to medium sized garden.
