This small evergreen tree is often grown as a shrub.
As a tree it develops a rounded crown; its new leaves open to red before hardening to green as they age. Frequent pruning encourages glorious red foliage and makes it every bit as beautiful as Pieris formosa.
Half standards have an approximate clear stem of 1.2-1.5m which makes for an ideal screen above a low wall.
