Raised in France, greengages are less common than plums in the UK but I think that means we have missed out! Green plum-like fruits mature to green / yellow when ripe and are sweet and juicy eaten straight from the tree. They are also a fantastic ingredient for a crumble or pie.
There is no VAT on this tree making it even better tasting! Thriving on most free draining soils a spring fertilizer is recommended to power fruit size and flavour. Keeping grass competition away from the base of the trunk is also beneficial, based on many a commercial fruit trail.
White flowers in the spring and good autumn colour also add interest for the garden.
