Bred by Edward Scanlon and patented in the States in 1965 it is often referred to as the ‘Bradford Pear’ which is in fact slightly broader and denser.
It won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002 and as its green lush foliage is so early to appear in spring and so late to fall in autumn it has excellent screening uses especially as a multi stem from ground level.
It is one of the very best Ornamental Pears with much to recommend it.
Abundant blossom is produced as early as March followed by glossy foliage which is late to fall in autumn when it turns orange and red.
It has rapidly established itself as a fine street tree and is tolerant of air pollution and even salty coastal winds but should not be planted in direct line with salt.
An excellent choice for the urban or rural environments
Mature height: 7-12m
