A winner of the Award of Garden Merit in 2002 it has been known to extend over 3 metres of growth in a single growing season from a coppice.
A medium to large tree with a rather pyramidal crown its young branches are a brilliant orange-red in winter especially if severely pruned every other year to produce a multi-stemmed tree.
